In 1962 American racing driver Carroll Shelby decided to unleash the
latent performance capability of the British AC-Ace sports car by installing
the 3621cc Ford V8 engine. The resultant creation was called the Cobra.
Ford approval followed, and the Cobra went into production with a 4260cc
V8 engine.
The tubular chassis cars were built in AC's Thames Ditton, Surrey, factory,
and shipped to the Shelby plant in Los Angeles for engine installation
and finishing. Soon the 4735cc Ford V8 was standardised, though eventually
6996cc engines were fitted.
The Shelby Cobras dominated Sports Car Club of America Class A racing from
1963 until 1969, and in 1965 Cobras won America's first-ever (and only)
World Manufacturers' Championship for Grand Touring Cars. |
